Think Logistics – the transport industry-led drive to encourage 16-19 -year-olds into a career within the transport and logistics sector is to feature on Truck World TV after the scheme’s latest workshop and presentation in December at Blackpool Sixth college. TV Company, Bigtank Productions, were on hand to film students engaging with Think Logistics representatives.

“Having filmed for many years within all aspects of the transport industry,” said Bigtank’s Rob Hallam, “we know what an exciting and innovating world it is but there is still work to be done in getting this message out to the wider population and in particular to young people.

“We jumped at the chance to include the Think Logistics programme,” he said, “as seeing young people actively engaged and enthusiastic about the career opportunities the industry offers is a real buzz and certainly works wonders in attracting new blood into the industry we know and love.”

Think Logistics, the brain-child of Abbey Logistics’ Steve Granite, has the full-backing of the RHA, the FTA and a number of leading truck operators, and is being delivered by national education charity, Career Ready UK. DAF Trucks is the primary sponsor of the initiative after announcing a three-year partnership at the CV Show in 2015.

In a busy 12-months, Career Ready UK has opened five new Think Logistics centres in the North East, Humberside, East Midlands, South West and Greater Manchester. To date, over 400 young people have attended Think Logistics workshops prompted in no small part by its attendance at some of the CV industry’s leading exhibitions and conferences.

“The event has been a truly eye-opening experience for our students,” said Samantha Brown, Curriculum Leader in Business & IT at Blackpool Sixth, “we were all surprised at just how many careers exist in the CV and wider logistics industry. There really does seem to be something for everyone,” she said,“ and our young people were left invigorated at the prospect of the logistics sector offering real, long-term career opportunities.

Through Career Ready UK, Think Logistics has ambitious plans to open 50 Career Ready logistics centres by September 2018. This will require 15 new centres opening each year beginning in September 2016.

Crucially, and in addition to regular Think Logistics workshops, real-world experience at the cutting edge of the logistics industry is provided by ‘mentoring’ programmes from leading operators involved in the project, including Eddie Stobart, Bibby Distribution, Matthew Kibble Transport, Brian Yeardley Continental, Caterpillar and several more.

“Not even 12 months into our involvement, and we’ve seen real progress” said DAF Trucks Managing Director, Ray Ashworth, “I said at last year’s CV Show how impressed I am with Think Logistics and how it has been engaging directly with young people. Plans for 50 logistics centres is very ambitious, and I’m very glad it is, too. It is only through ambitious programmes like this,” he said, “that the industry can raise its profile, and, talking of profile, I believe we have exactly the right calibre of partner on board to fully engage with youngsters and to excite them into a career in logistics.”
